Police hope to add detectives at budget time

Eric Bradshaw

The Mustang Police Department is looking to beef up its force by adding additional police detectives. Captain Willard James said the department gets more cases than the current detectives can physically handle.

“The number of cases that come forward for our two detectives to investigate exceed the number of hours that they are on the clock,” James said. “We have requested additions to our investigation division and we hope to move forward with that in the new fiscal year.”

In 2005, the Mustang Police Department acquired a new officer, Jeff Six, who completed his training in July and is now in the patrol division. He was Mustang’s only replacement, with no additional officers being added to the force, according to the police captain.

The year also saw the assignment of an additional officer to the Mustang public schools within the Mustang city limits. Officer Blaine Condreay joined Officer Kevin Simons in replacing the original Mustang school resource officer Otis Crawford.

“I like working with kids,” Condreay said, earlier this year, “My own kids like that I’m working at the school.”

James noted that during the summer break, Condreay and Simons returned to patrolling the city of Mustang. Officer Condreay he said, was recently attending a school resource officer training that took place in Little Rock, Arkansas, and was sponsored by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Deliquency Prevention and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The department also got approval for the addition of three patrol cars acquired from the Kansas Highway Patrol. The squad now includes 15 patrol vehicles, two detective units, and two administrative vehicles.

“The Kansas City Highway Patrol keeps cars until they reach a mileage of 48,000-58,000,” James said.

“We tend to keep ours until they are well over 100,000, until they are worn out or have any safety problems.”
