Celebrate Christmas at The Bridge

Carol Brimm

The Bridge Assembly of God Church in Mustang will celebrate Christmas this year with a pre-school production of “The Christmas Story” and production by the elementary age children of “The Late Great Potentate” on Dec. 10, 2006. Pre-school Director Jan Baker has produced “The Christmas Story” at The Bridge for 23 years and although the script is the same the characters change each year, according to Children’s Minister, Bev Robertson.

Robertson says “The Christmas Story” is the story of how Jesus came as a baby, portrayed by three, four and five-year olds.

“The kids start out singing in the choir and work their way up. It is a big deal for these kids to get to play a sheep,” Robertson said.

The choir has about 80 children and the play performance last 20 to 25 minutes.

“The black and white sheep come down the long aisles with the sheppards and sometimes three-year-old sheep go astray, so the length of the play depends upon the speed of the sheep,” Robertson laughed.

The elementary program begins following “The Christmas Story”. “The Late Great Potentate” is produced by Musical Program Director, Shelley Groves, and Drama Directors, Denise Owen and Roy Peck. It is the story of the Great Potentate, who missed the baby Jesus because he was late.

This is The Bridge’s second production of “The Late Great Potentate”. The upbeat, fun, musical was first performed at The Bridge 12 years ago, according to Robertson.

“There are adults with kids in the program who were in it as kids themselves,” Robertson said. “We will have a packed house that night. The cast includes children from the first through sixth grades and an adult cast too.”

This year’s cast includes Shannon Wynn, Seth Wynn, Chad Kerns, Madison McClure, Mariah Selvey, Tanner Poage, Conner Poage, Danielle Greenspan, Sierra Nichols, Audrey Campbell, Weston Gibbon, Roy Peck, and Brett Young.

The Bridge will also present a Christmas Concert on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. directed by Rex Stafford, Choir, Orchestra and Drama Minister. Stafford said the concert will include both fun and serious songs as well as comedy sketches, a variety show and congregational singing.

“We have a good time,” Stafford said. “One year we sang the BC Clark song together and another year we sang the Chipmunk Song, then in the second half we get down to the more serious and to-the-point songs and sketches.”

There is no charge for attendance at any of the Christmas plays or concerts at The Bridge and everyone welcome.

I was at the play and I thought it was great! Every year I enjoy going to the play and seeing all the kids. They work so hard and put in so much time. I am also so thankful for Miss Bev, Teahcer Jan, and everyone else who helps put on this wonderful production every year!
