Pitching propels MHS in Lawton

LAWTON—Mustang got stellar pitching performances last weekend, winning two out of three games for a runner-up finish at the Bo Bowman tournament at Lawton High School.

Mustang defeated host team Lawton 4-3 in the first round, then run-ruled Del City 9-1 in the semi-finals Thursday.

The Broncos lost a close championship game to Norman North on Friday, 3-2.

Head coach Tony Evans said his team played well throughout the tournament.

“We got really good pitching in the tournament. I believe we gave up three hits in three games. In the championship game, we gave up only two hits but had two costly errors that cost us all three runs, all unearned, and that was the difference in the game,” Evans said.

Senior southpaw Zac Tidholm pitched a complete game against Norman North but took the loss, going six innings, giving up two hits and zero earned runs, striking out seven and walking four. Tidholm is 5-2 on the year after the loss, with an ERA of 3.24.

Senior center fielder James Madison went 2-3, smacking a double and a triple and driving in a run. Junior designated hitter Cody Lacy went 1-2, getting a triple and scoring two runs.

Mustang managed runs in the top of the fifth and the top of the seventh to close the gap to a single run.

The Broncos had five hits in the game, but committed three errors on defense.

Norman North put up one run in the bottom of the second and two in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead.

In the semi-finals, the Broncos scored four runs in the top of the first, one in the top of the second, and two runs each in the top of the fourth and fifth to run-rule Del City in five innings.

Mustang took advantage of two Del City errors and pounded their pitchers for seven hits in the game. Seven different Bronco batters collected hits in the game, all singles.

Senior Brock Feldmann and senior first baseman Chase Ashley drove in two runs apiece. Senior left fielder Brooks McMurphy drew two walks and scored three runs.

Junior Brandon Greeson, 2-0, started the game for Mustang, pitching three innings, giving up no hits and striking out three to get the victory.

Senior Josh Crossley came in to pitch the last two innings, giving up one run on one hit, striking out three and walking three.

The Broncos defeated Lawton 4-3 Thursday on the strength of a complete game, no-hit performance for sophomore Robbie Schwartz. The right-hander, 4-2 after the win, gave up three runs, one earned, walking two and striking out six.

Madison hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot.

Junior catcher Justin Piatt and junior right fielder Dylan Glidden also had hits in the game, both getting an RBI.

Mustang is 6-2 in tournament play this season, with a second and a third place finish. The Broncos have scored 185 runs this year while allowing only 117.

The Broncos have a team batting average of .327.
