JENKS—In the waning moments of the championship game of the 33rd Jenks Invitational tournament Saturday, the Mustang Lady Broncos nearly avenged last year’s buzzer-beating loss to the host team, but an intercepted pass and two late free throws by the Jenks Lady Trojans proved that history is always repeatable.

Jenks hung on to defeat the Lady Broncos 54-52, winning their own tournament for a second consecutive year and ending another round of a burgeoning 6A girls basketball rivalry.

But the Lady Broncos did not go down without a fight. Mustang overcame a nine-point fourth-quarter Jenks lead, cutting the lead to three points with 54 seconds remaining. Junior forward Jordan Pyle recorded a double-double in the game with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Junior forward Lacy Ramon also kept the Lady Broncos in the game, scoring 19 and hitting a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line.

With less than a minute to go in the game, however, one of the few chinks in the defending state champion’s armor this season came back to haunt them.

Turnovers.

Jenks senior Angela Criner intercepted a pass as the Lady Broncos came down the court to potentially tie the game or take the lead. After she was fouled, Criner hit two free throws with 26 seconds remaining to seal the victory for the Lady Trojans.

With their first loss of the season, the Lady Broncos are 13-1. Their winning streak ended at 18 games.

The Lady Broncos hung tough in the first quarter with Jenks. After one the score was tied at 12 apiece. Jenks surged ahead in the second period, outscoring the Lady Broncos 23-14 to take a 35-26 halftime lead.

The two teams stalemated in the third, scoring 14 points each. Jenks took a 49-40 lead into the fourth quarter.

Mustang outscored Jenks 12-5 in the final stanza, but when the buzzer sounded, the Lady Broncos were one pass and two points short of hoisting another trophy.

Pyle and Ramon were named to the all-tournament team, along with Criner, who was named tournament MVP.

Junior forward Autumn Foley scored eight points for the Lady Broncos in the final. Junior guard Brittnay Prandy had two points for the game.

The Lady Broncos played in the championship game almost exactly 24 hours after beating last year’s 5A state champion, Tulsa East Central, 39-38.

Mustang outlasted Tulsa East Central in a defensive semi-final. The Lady Broncos held a nine-point lead in the game, 35-26 heading into the fourth quarter, and were outscored 12-4 in the last frame.

Pyle led the team with 14 points in the game, followed by Ramon with 10. Junior shooting guard Kaitlin Ellison had seven points. Prandy chipped in four. Senior point guard Kasey Tweed had two points. Foley contributed with two.

Mustang easily won their first round game Thursday against Stillwater, 57-27. Tweed made five of six three pointers in the game and finished with 17 points.

The Lady Broncos come home Friday night for homecoming against Yukon, who they already beat earlier in the season. Saturday the team travels to Edmond Santa Fe to play a make up game from the ice storm.
