Mustang High School senior Jake Edmonds has been named to the 2007 Southwest Orthopedic and Reconstructive Specialists Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Wrestling team.
Edmonds will join the Large West team at the OCA all-state wrestling duals July 23 at a location to be announced. Carl Albert High School wrestling coach Fay Barnett will be the head coach for the team.
Mustang head wrestling coach Dave Rankin said Edmonds, a three-time state tournament qualifier at 135 pounds, has battled injuries during his prep career, but impressed voters with his ability nonetheless.
“Jake’s been a super important component of our team over the last few years. He is an outstanding young man who works hard and makes good grades. As a wrestler, he is always a threat. Coaches vote on this award—they know he’s been hampered by injuries the last two years, and they saw the ability he has. (This award) is great for Jake and great for Mustang. We’ve had many all-state wrestlers at Mustang, and it’s good to see him added to that list,” Rankin said.
Edmonds finished his senior season with a 14-5 record. He won the 5A West Regional at Edmond North High School on Feb. 17, placed second at the Putnam City North Invitational on Jan. 27 and finished third at the Jay Hancock Memorial Tournament at Yukon High School on Feb. 3, all at 135 pounds.
Edmonds was one of five Mustang wrestlers to compete at the 2007 Class 5A state wrestling championship at State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City on Feb. 24. He was ranked as high as third in the state during the season by okwrestle.com.
The Broncos finished 11th at the 2007 state tournament.
Edmonds placed third at the 2005 Class 5A state wrestling championship.
Joining Edmonds on the Large West all-state team are: Tim and Tyler Untrauer of Midwest City; Deer Creek’s Chad Lousberg; Adam DeLong and Chris Hacjer of El Reno; Norman North’s Nik Turner and Billy Deal; Jeremy Garner of Western Heights; Chickasha’s Travis Wilkinson; Josh Johns of Noble; Lawton MacArthur’s Chris McNeil; and Enid’s Justin Glenn.
